"SCCIJ February luncheon: Power Industry in Japan: Opportunities and Challenges After Retail Electricity Liberalisation"

Title of the speech
Power Industry in Japan: Opportunities and Challenges After Retail Electricity Liberalisation
Brief summary of the speech
The March 2011 catastrophe entailed a full-fledged revision of the then existing energy policy of Japan. Feed In Tariff (FIT) for renewable energy was implemented in July 2012, and by 2014 this saw that there was an increase in electricity generation from renewable energy by 70%. However, new power control rules for the FIT commenced from January 2015 following the suspension of response to grid connection applications by five out of ten power utilities in September 2014. From a wider perspective, the discussion on Electricity Reform is ongoing. In April 2015, the Organisation for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators Japan commences its operation to accomplish completion on the initial phase of the Electricity System Reform. But there are open issues such as the optimum energy mix, a discussion of which has only just begun. This presentation will explore the landscape of the electricity business industry in view of prospective retail electricity liberalisation.
