As announced on January 20, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) will open an office in Yangon, Myanmar.
While MHM continues to provide a broad range of pioneering legal services to our clients through our offices in Tokyo and Singapore, and support desk in Bangkok, there has been a recent increase in demand for legal support from Japanese lawyers conveniently located to provide on-site services in Myanmar, as a result of rapid expansion in Myanmar by Japanese companies. To ensure that the firm meets the challenges of an ever-changing business environment and diversifying legal requirements while continuing to provide world-class client services, MHM has decided to open a new office in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, which will enhance our support system in the region.
The Yangon Office will be primarily staffed by Takeshi Mukawa, a partner who has worked extensively in the Finance, General Corporate and Mergers & Acquisitions practice areas and is a co-representative partner of our Singapore Office with abundant experience in Myanmar-related matters. The firm will also station several other experienced attorneys in the Yangon Office. MHM will continue to provide the finest legal services to its clients by utilizing the expertise of our lawyers in the firm's offices in Tokyo and Singapore and support desk in Bangkok. With the addition of the Yangon Office, the firm will enhance its ability to meet its Japanese clients' diverse legal needs in Myanmar and in the Southeast and Southern Asian regions and to provide on-site services to private and governmental entities in those regions for Japan-related legal matters.
Following the opening of Mori Hamada & Matsumoto offices in Beijing in 1998, Shanghai in 2005, Singapore in 2012, and the MHM Desk in Bangkok in 2013, this new office in Yangon will enable MHM to draw upon the experience it has gained handling complex legal matters specific to rapidly growing economies, as well as its years of experience handling a variety of cross-border transactions and projects, and will be even better positioned to provide legal services for businesses throughout Asia.
MHM aims to open its Yangon Office in the spring of 2014 upon completion of necessary procedures with Myanmar governmental agencies. Further announcements will be made when the opening date and other details are finalized.
